In 19 competitive games Chelsea have only beaten Reading by +2 goals once. (3-1). Expecting a tough cagey game. points > performance

The first half…
KICK OFF AT STAMFORD BRIDGE: Chelsea 0-0 Reading. COME ON YOU BLUES!
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Mata runs up the middle and passes towrds the Shed End through to Hazard, who side-foots just wide of the far post.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
the touches, passing and movement looking very entertaining, very positive.just needs end product of course.
— Chelsea Stats (@ChelseaStats) August 22, 2012
This match is 5mins old. Juan Mata has already been left winger, in the hole, and holding midfielder. No wonder the lad looks knackered.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Ramires turns on to his left and shoots, right foot shot was on, once cut in had easy pass and easier shot for Torres. 0-0. 7 minutes
— Chelsea Stats (@ChelseaStats) August 22, 2012
Should Ramires have squared to Torres there? Waiting and unmarked, so probably. But, then, Torres probably should have chased the rebound.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
THAT was the definition of "A Torres" - beats everyone, miraculous last man block.
— Chelsea Rumours (@ChelseaRumours) August 22, 2012
Ramires & Sturridge are not wingers; have to be aware of that when any of them plays on the wing. Wingers wouldn't hesitate for a pass.

PENALTY TO CHELSEA!
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Hazard wins another penalty...

GOOOAAALLL! CHELSEA 1-0 READING. LAMPAAAAARD PEN!
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Chelsea 1-0 Reading: all Hazard. Belgian twists & turns on edge of box, making a fool of Gunter. Inevitable foul comes. Lampard pen a bullet
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
GOAL: Chelsea 1-1 Reading.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
What a goal by Pogrebnyak, 1-1.
— Chelsea Rumours (@ChelseaRumours) August 22, 2012
Chelsea 1-1 Reading: McCleary works a clever little triangle on the right, and crosses in to Pogrebnyak, who evades Cahill to head past Cech
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
GOAL: Chelsea 1-2 Reading.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Awful, awful goalkeeping from Petr Cech. Reading lead 2-1 at Chelsea!
— Dale Johnson (@dalejohnsonESPN) August 22, 2012
Chelsea 1-2 Reading: Harte runs over edge-of-box free kick, and Guthrie takes it. Cech dives to save, but the ball spins behind him. Oops.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
GOAL: Chelsea 1-2 Reading - Turnaround at the Bridge as Reading take the lead through Danny Guthrie. Assist to Cech - shocker for the keeper
— BBC Sport (@BBCSport) August 22, 2012
3 - Since the start of 2009-10, Chelsea have won just three of the 25 PL games that they have conceded 2+ goals in. Worry.
— Opta Sports (@OptaJoe) August 22, 2012
Credit there to Mikel, who skipped over a sliding tackle and sped down the left wing. Perfect cross to Hazard, who cannons it over.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Someone needs to tell Cech to stop punting it down the middle towards Torres, might as well kick it out of play.
— Chelsea Stats (@ChelseaStats) August 22, 2012
Reading are playing really, really well. On top at Chelsea and 2-1 up.
— Dale Johnson (@dalejohnsonESPN) August 22, 2012
From dominating the first 24 minutes Chelsea really have struggled the last 20
— Chelsea Stats (@ChelseaStats) August 22, 2012
Could easily have been 1-3, as Reading free kick is narrowly short of being headed in. Chelsea desperate for HT now.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
And Torres should have made it 2-2, header 8 yards out and puts it wide.
— Dale Johnson (@dalejohnsonESPN) August 22, 2012
HT: Chelsea 1-2 Reading. Blues well on top for 25mins: Lamps pen the difference. Then forget how to to play football & concede two. Bizarre.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Half-time…
Half-time here.
— Ben Rumsby (@benrumsbyPA) August 22, 2012#cfc were in complete control for 25 mins. But their defence now looking very vulnerable.#readingfc#pasoccer
I think we can blame all of Chelsea's defensive woes on David Luiz
— Graham MacAree (@MacAree) August 22, 2012
Reading have only ever beaten Chelsea once in the league - 3-1 in 1930 - and never away from home.
— Jonathan Wilson (@jonawils) August 22, 2012
Goals > Passes, Points > Possession RT
— Chelsea Stats (@ChelseaStats) August 22, 2012@eplstatman: Reading only made 77 successful passes in the first half - Chelsea made 308#CFC
I missed the Olympics in the USA but it couldn't be helped. To make up for it, because God loves me, he is now making Chelsea lose.
— Danny Baker (@prodnose) August 22, 2012
Torres didn't play *that* badly. Needs to improve in the 2nd half though.
— Chelsea Rumours (@ChelseaRumours) August 22, 2012
The second half…
Second half under-way: Chelsea 1-2 Reading. WAKE UP CHELSEA: THE SEASON HAS STARTED!
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Hazard to the Reading box: slides ball to a marginally onside Torres, who takes it too far. Crosses back to Ivanovic, who puts it in Row Z.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
What we have learned so far: £100m of attacking talent is nice, but it won't stop your defence from leaking like a colander.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Hazard, Mata working hard. Oscar coming on.
— Chelsea Rumours (@ChelseaRumours) August 22, 2012
Reading, having secured their 1-2 lead, are now playing a 9-0-Pogrebnyak formation. Chelsea sub: Oscar on for Ramires.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Oscar looks good. But not sure a player weighing slightly less than a Rizla is the answer on a night when JT is being muscled off the ball.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Torres goes down a dead end; back to Ivanovic - blocked; back to Lampard - blocked; back to Hazard - blocked.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Sturridge on for Mikel.
— Chelsea Rumours (@ChelseaRumours) August 22, 2012
GOOOOOAAALLL! CHELSEA 2-2 READING. CAHILLLLLL!
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Cahill equaliser from 25 yards. 2-2. Poor goalkeeping by Federici.
— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) August 22, 2012
Now, Torres! NOW would be the time to score!
— Chelsea Rumours (@ChelseaRumours) August 22, 2012
GOAL: Chelsea back on level terms, it's come from an unlikely source, Gary Cahill from distance. Another keeping howler, Federici error, 2-2
— BBC Sport (@BBCSport) August 22, 2012
Oscar not impressed so much today but whatever.
— Chelsea Rumours (@ChelseaRumours) August 22, 2012
Reading sub: Hunt (not THAT one, Noel) on for Pogrebnyak.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Torres makes it 3-2 from close range after cross by Cole. Torres offside but goal given.
— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) August 22, 2012
Chelsea 3-2 Reading: Torres from the middle, to Mata, to Cole, back to Torres, GOAL! More than a hint of offside. But who cares?
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Chelsea sub: Meireles on for Mata.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Brian McDermott going ballistic with the assistant referee for missing the Torres offside.

5mins added time. FIVE!
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Reading now camped out on the edge of the Chelsea box. Set-piece, after set-piece. Hold steady, lads!
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Harte free kick from 30 yards pushed wide by Cech. Reading corner. Federici goes up...
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
GOOOOOAAAALLLLL! CHELSEA 4-2 READING!
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
4-2. Federici upfield for a corner, Hazard breaks, Ivanovic strokes in.
— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) August 22, 2012
ANOTHER EDEN HAZARD ASSIST!
— Dale Johnson (@dalejohnsonESPN) August 22, 2012
Full-time…
FT: Chelsea 4-2 Reading. Never a dull moment. Ahead, behind, ahead: Lampard, Cahill, Torres, Ivanovic. Not encouraging but 3pts. Again.
— Dan Levene (@BluesChronicle) August 22, 2012
Eden Hazard has five more assists than the whole of the Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United squads combined.
— Dale Johnson (@dalejohnsonESPN) August 22, 2012#twittertitter
Chelsea 4:2 Reading - Lampard (pen), Cahill, Torres, Ivanovic. Top of the league and having a laugh!
— TheChels.Org (@TheChelsOrg) August 22, 2012#CFC
Must begin with Hazard. Kid is elite. Said it when he signed but he's already a big impact player in his first games. Will be a monster.
— Chelsea Youth (@chelseayouth) August 22, 2012
Hazard and Mata connect well without experience together. Kindred spirits. This team will destroy someone when their play clicks.
— Chelsea Youth (@chelseayouth) August 22, 2012
If the team had a better forward they might do so more easily. Torres frustrating again, goal (on a plate) aside.
— Chelsea Youth (@chelseayouth) August 22, 2012
When
— Chelsea Youth (@chelseayouth) August 22, 2012#CFC were deep he showed well, dropped and linked. When attacking, he isolated himself miles away from the play.
Eden Hazard again impressive for
— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) August 22, 2012#cfc. More assists, tracked back, unfazed by the pace and physicality of the PL. Bigger tests to come tho
The match reports
The Guardian, Dominic Fifield: "Chelsea perch on top of the fledgling Premier League table, restored to the summit for the first time in almost 21 months, yet that is where the prescribed script from this frantic occasion has to be ditched. Where the locals might have anticipated a saunter, instead the emotion that gripped this stadium on the final whistle was one of relief. It felt like an achievement to deflate and defeat Reading, newly arrived from the Championship."
The Daily Telegraph, Henry Winter: “This game had been brought forward because of Chelsea’s involvement in the Uefa Super Cup in Monaco next week but there were periods when they looked anything like the champions of Europe. The Championship winners led at half-time, having exploited alarming mistakes in the Chelsea defence.”
The Official Chelsea FC Website: “It needed late goals from Fernando Torres and Branislav Ivanovic to seal victory and make it two wins out of two after Chelsea overcame a first-half wobble that gave Reading a lead at the interval. As at Wigan, the football at times oozed promise for the season to come with Eden Hazard again impressing.”
